Simplicity Doesn’t Come Easy

The older I get, the more I realize that simplicity takes work.
It sounds peaceful in theory - living simply, thinking clearly, cutting out the noise - but for most of us, it’s anything but simple.
I’ve spent most of my life surrounded by complexity. Complex projects. Complex decisions. Complex emotions. And somewhere along the way, that complexity became my comfort zone.
It showed up in how I worked, how I lived, and even how I managed money.I used to believe that if something was complicated, it must be better. If a financial plan looked sophisticated, it had to be smarter.
But eventually, I learned that the goal isn’t to make things look smarter - it’s to make them work.
When I first started managing my own finances, I chased information.I wanted to know everything - every strategy, every option, every shortcut to better returns. But the more I learned, the less clarity I had.
That’s when I realized that simplicity doesn’t mean doing less. It means doing what matters, clearly and consistently.
For me, that looked like a few small shifts.Understanding where my money goes. Saving regularly. Investing in things I understand. And letting go of the need to chase every new opportunity.
But even today, simplicity takes effort. My mind still likes to overcomplicate, to plan, to optimize. So I remind myself often - it’s okay to slow down, to choose fewer things, to keep life light.
“Simplicity isn’t the absence of complexity. It’s the reward for clarity.”
In both money and life, I’ve learned that the simpler I keep things, the more peace I create. And while I’m still learning to live that way every day, each step toward simplicity feels like a step toward freedom.
Well said! I am trying my best to do the same now.
